Continued Training

Posted by: Jodith on Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

One important aspect of climbing the career ladder is continuing your training. There are any number of seminars and training classes out there available for administrative support personnel, however some of them are terribly expensive.

If your employer doesn’t pay for continued training for administrative personnel (and I’ve worked for more than a few who don’t), check out your local community college or technical school. These places often have non-credit, continuing education courses at a price far lower than many of the big name providers. Just call and ask if they have a continuing education catalog and ask them to send it to you. Many will have classes specifically on administrative topics as well as various Microsoft Office trainings.

Continued training is indeed very important. One should never stop learning in the field they’re working in. I’ve found most companies are willing to pay for seminars and classes when it’s relevant and necessary. The tough one is when you’re working for yourself in you’re own small business. There’s still other resources though.

One thing I like to remind folks is tht it doesn’t hurt to ask to go to trainings.  All the boss can do is say no.  But usually, they like to have an employee who stays on top of their skills.  So look at what you’d like to work on, whether it’s a software skill or time management or phone etiquette, and then look for classes to attend.  This is something that is good to talk over with your boss at evaluation time as well.  What goals does she have for you over the next year and what kind of classes will help you meet that goal.
