Year End Retrospective

By | Dec 28, 2009

The end of the year is upon us once again.  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday.  We had a nice, quiet holiday at home with the dogs and cats.

As the sun returns and we look forward to a new year, it’s nice to look back at the year just past.  It was a good year at Administrative Arts.  The number of readers has grown hugely, and I’m getting a great deal of love from the search engines.  I thank each and every one of you who reads this blog, and I especially thank all of you who have taken time to tell me how much you enjoy it and how it’s helped you in your work.  That’s what we bloggers live for.

Let’s take a look at the most popular content during 2009.  I’ll first list the most popular content written in 2009, and then the most popular content overall for this last year.

Top 10 Posts from 2009

  1. 5 Tips for Appropriate Casual Friday Dress – I wrote this in January, but somewhere around June it went viral and ended up with almost 11,000 hits.
  2. Networking for a New Job – Part of my So You’ve Been Laid Off series, this post garnered over 4,200 hits.
  3. 10 Things To Do When You Have Nothing To Do
  4. Creating a Desk Reference Manual
  5. Working With Confidential Documents
  6. COBRA Tips for Manipulating the System Legally – Another one from the So You’ve Been Laid Off series, it’s been betting more popular as the year wears on (and more people get laid off).
  7. Creating a Printed Watermark in Microsoft Word – In my survey, I’ve had a lot of requests for more tutorial type posts, so look for more of them in the coming year.
  8. Pumping Up Your Resume – Another one from the So You’ve Been Laid Off series.
  9. So You’ve Been Laid Off – This one kicked off the whole So You’ve Been Laid Off series.  I started it when dealing with my own lay off last year.
  10. What have you been doing with your time off? – And, yes, another one from the So You’ve Been Laid Off series.  I’m sensing a pattern here.

Top 10 Most Popular Posts in 2009 (Regardless of date written)

As it turns out, much of the most popular content hasn’t changed from last year.

  1. Making a Full Page of the Same Label – This post went viral around January, and peaked in April.  Written in 2008, it gathered over 22,000 hits in 2009!
  2. 5 Tips for Appropriate Casual Friday Dress
  3. Receptionist Tips, Part Deaux – I don’t know why, but this was twice as popular as Part 1.
  4. Receptionist Tips I
  5. Networking for a New Job
  6. 10 Things To Do When You Have Nothing To Do
  7. Travel Arrangements to Wow Any Boss, Part Two – The Itinerary – Again, the 2nd part was more popular than the 1st by half again.
  8. Create an Auto Fill-In Form in Access – while one of my most popular posts with the search engines, it also has one of my highest bounce rates, so I’m assuming most of the people googling this aren’t in the admin support field.
  9. Creating a Desk Reference Manual
  10. Travel Arrangements to Wow Any Boss Part One

Looking Forward to the New Year

Thanks again for a great year, everyone.  I’ll be doing my best to see that 2010 is even better.  I’ve got some great ideas for the coming year, so I hope you all stick around for it.
