Casual Friday: Change the Present

As Christmas continues to barrel toward us, I know many of us are still struggling with what to get that one person who seems to have everything. Or that one person we’d like to give a nice gift, but we don’t really know them well enough to know what they’d like. Well, today I found another way to give gifts.

With Changing the Present, you can make a charitable contribution in the name of the person to whom you want to give a gift. They have hundreds of non-profits to choose from, so there’s something to suit everyone on your list this year.

And, if you prefer to receive gifts of charitable contributions, you can sign up on the Changing the Present website and let people know which charities you want to support.

Casual Friday: Auditorium

Auditorium is a great little flash game. It’s creators wanted to make a simple little flash game to sit at the top of their website to encourage people to stay longer on the site. And that’s what it did…sit. It just sat there for months with few visitors. And then one day, someone wrote about it on a blog, and then another, and then another. And suddenly they were being hit with up to 1000 visitors at a time playing the game.

I played the game for a while last night, and it’s quite addicting. I’m not going to tell you alot about it, because figuring out how to play the game is part of the puzzle of it. This game is an intriqueing blend of light, color and music all wrapped up in a fascinating puzzle. I know you’re going to enjoy it.

Happy Friday! So glad to see that we all made it through the week.

I don’t know how many of you are into social networking like digg and StumbleUpon. I’ve been on StumbleUpon for a while, but never really got into it that much. However, a few weeks ago, I finally broke down and joined Twitter.

Twitter is a little bit different. You post updates, but you are limited to 140 characters at a time. I didn’t think I’d like it, but I’ve really enjoyed it so far. So, go give it a try. You can follow me there, too.

Casual Friday: Find great blogs

So, today I have an addendum to the Casual Friday. Chuck Westbrook has a great idea to help good blogs with few readers get more notice.

Essentially, a blog will be chosen every two weeks, and everyone that signs on will read that blog for two weeks. At the end of the two weeks, we switch to another blog. That doesn’t mean, of course, that you have to stop reading the first blog. If you’ve found it interesting, that’s great! If not, though, your only obligation is to read it for the first two weeks.

If you like great blogs like I do (I’m too embarassed to tell you how many blogs I have in my reader), you’ll enjoy this project.Similar Posts:

Casual Friday: Blobber

Please don’t hate me for posting this. Yes, I know you aren’t going to get anything else done for the rest of the day, but if I’m obsessed, you must be also. It’s only fair.

Blobber is an extremely easy game to play, and absolutely obsessive once you start playing it. I’ve known about this game for a couple of years, and even after all the times I’ve played it, every time I see it again, I still get obsessed with it.

So, have fun. It’s the weekend after all.

Casual Friday: Try Netflix for Free

My husband and I have been using Netflix for a couple of years now. For those who haven’t looked at it, it works like this. You pay a monthly fee depending on how many movies you want to have out at a time. You request your movies, and Netflix mails them to you. You keep them as long as you want. When you want another movie, you simply mail a movie back (shipping is free), and they send you the next movie on your list.

We use the 3 movie plan. That way, unless we go on a movie watching binge over the weekend, we always have at least one disk in the house to watch (with one on the way back to Netflix and another on the way to us). Depending on your movie watching habits, you can have a plan with between 1 and 5 movies at a time. You can even have more than one list. For example: you can have one list for your kids and one for you, so that if your kids don’t return a movie, it doesn’t affect your ability to get your next movie. Just assign however many from your monthly subscription you want to go to each list.

Netflix has a huge catalog of movies and should you want a movie they don’t have, assuming it has been released on DVD, you can request it and they’ll order it. The few times we’ve wanted something that wasn’t on their catalog, they had it within a month of us requesting it. They also have a huge number of TV shows on DVD. It’s gotten to where I can’t stand to watch shows at broadcast because the commercials annoy me so much *laughs*.

Casual Friday – Everquest II revisited

I talked about Everquest II in a previous Casual Friday post. Well, if you want to give it a try, Sony is giving away free trials through the end of August, and it includes all of the expansions, so you won’t have to buy anything. If you like it at the end of your free month, all you have to do is sign up for the monthly fee, which is $14.99 per month (cheaper if you buy multiple months at a time).

You get the free trial by receiving an invite from a current subscriber. I still have about 15 trials left to give out. If you are interested, leave a comment and I’ll e-mail an invitation to you.

NOTE: The computer requirements for the game are relatively high. Please don’t request an invitation if you don’t meet the minimum requirements for the game, which are:

Operating System: Windows 98/2000/ME/XP
Processor: 1GHz
RAM: 512 MB
Video Card: DirectX 9 compatible. Pixel shader and vertex shader compatible hardware with 64 MB of texture memory
